Practical seasonal guidance from Lakeshore Pool & Deck, written to help local homeowners protect their pools and make informed decisions.

Mesh, Solid or Safety Pool Cover: What to Choose for Winter

Choosing a winter pool cover involves more than deciding between mesh and solid fabric. You also need to know whether the product is a safety cover, how it attaches to your pool and what maintenance it requires. Those are separate questions.

For Barrie homeowners preparing to close, the first step is to identify the cover you already have. Find its label or instructions and check its condition before ordering a replacement or booking installation.

Mesh and solid describe the material

Mesh generally allows water to pass through, while solid material holds water unless the cover has a drain panel or another drainage arrangement. This affects what you must monitor through rain, snow and thawing conditions.

A solid cover without drainage may require a compatible cover pump. Follow the particular cover’s instructions when choosing and using one. A cover pump removes accumulated surface water. It does not winterize the pool’s circulation plumbing.

Safety describes the cover system

Do not assume that a cover is a safety cover because it is thick, solid or held down around the edges. Check the manufacturer’s stated safety classification and installation requirements. A safety system depends on correct fit, sound attachments and proper installation.

LOOP-LOC’s cover guidance describes product-specific safety requirements and installation considerations. Use documentation for the actual product on your pool, even if another cover looks similar.

Keep children and pets away from the covered pool. A winter cover is not a walking surface, and it does not remove the need to maintain gates and barriers.

What should above-ground pool owners check?

Check that the cover is made for your pool shape, dimensions and attachment arrangement. Locate the matching hardware and inspect the cover edge for wear. If your pool has a surrounding deck, explain how the cover is normally secured.

Do not assume that a deck creates an appropriate anchor point for any safety cover. The product and structure must be suitable for that installation. If you are uncertain, have the setup assessed before purchasing.

What should in-ground pool owners check?

Identify whether your current system uses water bags or fitted straps and anchors. Inspect accessible components for damage and note any missing parts. Tell the installer about changes to coping, decking, steps or pool shape since the cover was measured.

A replacement may need professional measurement. Existing anchors do not automatically make an unrelated cover compatible. Ask what must be checked before ordering and whether any additional installation work is needed.

Five questions before choosing a cover

  • Fit: is it designed for this pool’s dimensions and features?
  • Safety: what classification does the manufacturer actually state?
  • Drainage: how will surface water be managed?
  • Hardware: are the attachments complete and compatible?
  • Care: can you carry out the required winter checks?

Also ask about the supplied instructions and warranty conditions. Compare the full purchase and installation requirements rather than the fabric alone.

When should you report damage?

Report a torn cover, missing hardware or questionable fit before closing day. Provide photos if possible. It is easier to plan replacement materials when the crew knows what is missing.

Lakeshore’s standard closing includes installation of the customer-supplied cover. A replacement cover, water bags or cover pump is separate from that standard service and must be included in the confirmed quote where required.

Prepare for closing

Keep the cover and all its parts together in an accessible location. Use our appointment checklist to prepare the rest of the backyard, then read what to check after closing.
