Pool Advice • Barrie & Simcoe County

Practical seasonal guidance from Lakeshore Pool & Deck, written to help local homeowners protect their pools and make informed decisions.

Does Pool Closing Include Heaters? What to Expect

If your pool has a heater, ask about it before booking a closing. Turning the heater off is only part of the job. Water left inside the unit or its connected plumbing can freeze, expand and damage expensive parts. The winterization method depends on the heater model and installation.

At Lakeshore Pool & Deck, heater winterization is included in our standard pool closing when your pool has a heater. Tell us the make and model when you request service so we can review the equipment before confirming the appointment. This applies to both above-ground and in-ground closing requests.

What does heater winterization involve?

The goal is to leave the heater and its connected water lines ready for freezing weather. A closing crew shuts down the system, drains the heater using the procedure for that model, and winterizes the connected pool plumbing as part of the overall closing. The exact drain points and sequence differ among gas heaters, heat pumps and individual models.

This is why a heater should be treated as equipment with its own winterization requirements, not just another pipe. Raypak’s winterization guidance describes the need to drain water from its heaters and related equipment. Your own manufacturer’s instructions take priority for your particular model.

A proper pool closing in Barrie also addresses the pump, filter, plumbing lines, standard winter chemicals and installation of the customer’s existing cover under the confirmed scope. The heater should be considered alongside that equipment so water is not left in a vulnerable part of the system.

What is included at Lakeshore, and what might cost extra?

Normal heater winterization is included in Lakeshore’s standard closing price. There is no separate heater add-on just because you have a heater.

Heater repair, replacement parts, a tune-up or work on gas or electrical connections are different services. If we find a leak, damaged fitting, missing drain component or another condition that changes the work, we will review it with you before additional work is approved. Extra water features, spas or unusually complex plumbing can also affect a closing quote. The pool closing request lets you describe your setup so the quote can be checked before scheduling.

What should you tell the closing crew?

Share these details with your request:

  • The heater brand and model, if you know them.
  • Whether it is a gas heater or heat pump.
  • Clear photos of the heater, equipment pad and connected plumbing.
  • Any leaks, error codes, bypasses or changes made to the system this year.
  • Any gate, deck or stored items that limit access to the equipment.

You do not need to know the technical winterization steps. Good photos and an accurate equipment description help the crew identify the setup and discuss anything unusual before the visit.

How can you prepare for closing day?

Make the equipment area accessible, unlock the gate and secure pets. If you have the heater manual, keep it available. You can also review our pool closing appointment checklist for the other items to prepare.

After the pool is closed, avoid restarting the pump or heater or changing the winterized valve arrangement. That could put water back into components prepared for freezing conditions. If you need to change something, contact the closing crew first.

The short answer is simple: yes, Lakeshore includes normal heater winterization in a standard closing. Choose your pool type and send your equipment details through the closing request page. We will review the scope and confirm the quote before booking.
